Fetal Medicine

Fetal Medicine

Perinatology is the branch of Gynecology and Obstetrics that deals with high risk pregnancies. It deals with risk assessment of patients before, during and after pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis of many feto-maternal (fetus-maternal) diseases, making treatment-follow-up plans and performing invasive interventions if necessary. In risky or problematic pregnancies, it ensures the completion of their treatment during pregnancy, at birth and afterwards. Investigating whether the fetus is healthy in terms of structural and chromosomal anomalies, performing necessary tests and invasive interventions in suspicious situations (amniocentesis, CVS, cordocentesis) is the main concern of the perinatology department.

In addition, the evaluation and follow-up of diseases (hypertension, diabetes, preeclampsia, hypo-hyperthyroidism, etc.) that existed before or during pregnancy in the mother also concern this area. In structural or functional fetal anomalies that can be treated, the necessary medical treatments (such as fetal cardiac arrhythmias, fetal goiter) or interventional procedures (such as intrauterine blood transfusion, fetal shunt insertion) are performed by Perinatology specialists. Perinatology is among the topics that are concerned with the provision of preconception counseling (before conception), planning necessary examinations and treatments, in the presence of a genetic or systemic disease in parents, or in patients who have previously had a problematic pregnancy in terms of mother or fetus.
